For players joining an NYBL team.

Boffer Sword

 Participant should have their own boffer sword that is:

  • Suitable for their age and size.
  • Built to NYBL Standards.
  • In good repair.

Boffer Shield

Participants should have their own boffer shield that is:

  • Suitable for their age and size.
  • Built to NYBL Standards.
  • In goof repair.

Shoes

Participants should wear comfortable closed-toe athletic shoes suitable for running and movement on various surfaces. Spiked cleats are not allowed.

Team Jersey

Participants should have an NYBL team jersey by the end of the season to compete in the Grand Tournament.

There are many foam smiths online. Equipment must comply with NYBL standards. Check the NYBL Standards to make sure the boffers will pass NYBL equipment check.

Build Boffer Equipment

Build guides and courses to help you craft equipment are on their way. For now you can view the many guide that are out there on the internet for other boffer sports like Belegarth, Amtgard, Dagorhir, and Jugger. Then apapt them so your boffers comply with the NYBL Standards set in the NYBL Rules of Play v2.2.

NYBL Sword Standards

From the v2.2 NYBL Rules of Play, Updated 2022

Sword must have a tagging surface (blade), handle, and pommel. Must be 

R

Swords total length must not longer than 34″ or shorter than 18″.

R

Swords total weight must not exceed 13 ounces. There is no minimum weight.

R

Sword must have a soft fabric cover in good repair over the full legth of the blade. “Good repair” is considered without a tear or combination of tears larger than a quarter.

R

Blade width must be no less than 2.5″ at any point. 

R

Blade must have minimum of 1″ of padding.

R

Blade cushioning must be enough to prevent the core from being felt during a full-force hit.

Pommel must be at least 2″ in diameter

R

Blade must be cylindrical. No flat blades.

Unpadded portion of a sword (hande) must not exceed 8″ or 1/3 of the total length of the blade.

Rigid core must not be constructed out of wood or metal. Bamboo is an exception and may be used.

Q

Blade must not flex more than 45 degrees during a full force strike.

NYBL Shield Standards

Max shield diameter for players under 12 years old is 24″

R

Max shield diameter for players older than 12 years old is 27″

Other shaped shields must fit within the area of an appropriately sized round shield.

R

Shields front and sides must be covered in a fabric cover that is in good repair.

R

There must be a minimum of 1″ of foam between the core and any contact surface.

Must not be any hard or sharp surfaces

Must not contain a metal core.

Must not fold in half or be overly flexable in any direction.
